Biden defends US ambassador appointment rejected by Nicaragua

According to a US State Department official, US President Joe Biden stated that he has “great trust” in the US ambassador appointed to Nicaragua after being turned down by Daniel Ortega’s administration.
Hugo Rodriguez “remains the president’s complete trust,” according to a State Department spokeswoman, who also emphasised that during his hearing before the Senate, he “accurately conveyed the bipartisan political perspectives” of the United States.

Due to his “interventionist” approach, the Nicaraguan government declared on Friday that it would “not accept” the ambassador.
“We reiterate: Mr. Hugo Rodriguez will never be permitted to enter Nicaragua (. . . ) Let these imperial gentlemen assume Hugo Rodriguez won’t approach this area “Rosario Moreau, vice president of Nicaragua, stated.

During a hearing in the US Senate, Rodriguez, who termed Ortega’s administration a “dictatorship,” demanded that Nicaragua be dropped from the “Central American Dominican Republic and the United States Free Trade Agreement” (CAFTA).
Washington made the decision to retain incumbent ambassador Kevin Sullivan in his position in the face of this rejection.
According to a spokesman for the State Department, the US is still dedicated to “promot[ing] the return of democratic rule to Nicaragua.

In response to corruption and breaches of human rights, Washington levied penalties on Ortega government officials and their relatives.
The Nicaraguan government severed diplomatic ties with the Netherlands and expelled the EU ambassador this week in addition to rejecting the incoming US ambassador, which furthered its international isolation.
