Persona non grata: EU ambassador leaves Nicaragua

Bettina Mochaidet, the ambassador of the European Union to Nicaragua, left the nation on Saturday, three days after President Daniel Ortega’s administration deemed her “persona non grata.”
This comes after a week of tense diplomatic relations with Nicaragua and other countries.
Bettina Mochaidet was verbally instructed to leave Nicaragua by Denis Moncada, the country’s foreign minister, after the European Union delegation requested the release of “political prisoners” at the UN General Assembly last week.

Additionally, the Ortega administration declared on Friday that it will sever diplomatic ties with the Netherlands.
The Dutch foreign minister posted on Twitter on Saturday, “The Netherlands regrets the excessive decision taken by Nicaragua to terminate diplomatic ties.” We firmly condemn Nicaragua’s weakening democratic institutions and human rights abuses.
Other nations have observed challenges in keeping an open conversation with Nicaragua, he continued.

With the EU, we will talk about our next moves.
Rosario Murillo, the vice president of Nicaragua, declared that her nation would not recognise Hugo Rodriguez, the new ambassador that the United States had selected, as its envoy in Managua.
