German parliamentary delegation arrives in Taiwan amid escalating tension with China

As regional tensions with China increase, a multiparty delegation of German parliamentarians landed in Taipei on Sunday.
According to the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the group is the first official one from Germany to visit Taiwan since the coronavirus pandemic broke out in 2019.

A delegation from the Berlin-Taipei Parliamentary Friendship Group of the German Bundestag was welcomed by Taiwan’s deputy foreign minister Alexander Tah Ray Yue upon their arrival at Tao Yuan International Airport.
It’s anticipated that the delegation would remain in Taiwan through next Thursday.

Klaus-Peter Welch, the delegation’s leader, will meet with President Tsai Ing-wen, Vice President Lai Cheng-tee, Speaker of the Parliament Yu Si-kun, Foreign Minister Joseph Wu, other Taiwan lawmakers, and members of security agencies.
To increase bilateral trade in technology and supply chain integrity, the group will also stop by a science complex in southern Taiwan.

Ji Wei Shih, the Taiwanese ambassador to Germany, made the journey back to Taipei with the German group from Frankfurt.
According to the Taiwan Foreign Ministry, the visit demonstrates that many parties support Germany’s support for Taiwan.
Since Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the US house of representatives, paid Taipei a visit in early August, which was followed by China’s extensive moves on Taiwan, this is the second group from a significant European nation to travel there.

Early in September, a delegation of French lawmakers travelled to Taiwan.
Although China considers the democratic island to be a part of its territory and opposes all official contacts between Taiwan and other nations, Taiwan has had an autonomous government since 1949.
