More than 50K attend Richmond Hill, Ont. protest against Iranian government

More than 50,000 people gathered in Richmond Hill on Saturday, according to the police, to show their support for the nationwide protests that have broken out in Iran.
The occasion was organised in support of the ongoing unrest in the nation brought on by the passing of Mahsa Amini, 22. She passed away while being held by the “morality police” of Iran for reportedly donning her hijab too loosely.
Iranian-Canadians for Justice and Human Rights organised the event, which took place in front of the Richmond Hill Central Library.

The purpose of the event, according to its organisers, was to “bring together Canadians of all ages, races, and religions to voice out in favour of the people of Iran, particularly its strong women.”
According to police, “upwards of over 50,000” people may have attended the gathering, according to Global News.
Increased crowds and traffic were observed in the area on Saturday, according to York Regional Police, who added police “to protect public safety.”

The purpose of the gathering, according to the organisers, was to “loudly repeat” Iranian protestors’ voices.
“The people of Iran have repeatedly requested the international community to be their voice and magnify their demands,” they stated. “As Iran’s leadership cuts off the internet in the country and kills demonstrators indiscriminately.”
The demonstration was held in front of the Richmond Hill Public Library, which described it as a “historic moment of worldwide scale for the Richmond Hill community.

The demonstration was slated to start near Yonge Street and 16th Avenue in Richmond Hill at around 2:00 p.m., and then march to the main library. Including materials from Darrian Matassa-Fung of Global News.
