According to what the UN Secretary-General and one of the lawyers working on the case revealed on Saturday, the 85-year-old Iranian-American Baqer Namazi, who was stuck in Iran after being arrested there, was permitted to leave while his incarcerated son Siamak was freed.

The two men’s lawyer, Jared Geinser, said in a statement, “These are crucial early beginnings, but we will not stop as long as Namazi and his son are unable to return together to the United States and their lengthy nightmare is not finished.
The dispute was arbitrated by one of the countries in the region, according to Iranian media.

As for himself, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his “thanks for allowing Bagher Namazi to leave Iran for medical treatment abroad, after contacts (the Secretary-General) conducted with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.”
When he travelled to Iran to request the release of his son Siamak Namazi, an Iranian-American businessman who was detained in October 2015, Baqer Namazi, a former UNICEF official, was detained in February 2016.

In October 2016, the father and son were found guilty of espionage and given a ten-year prison sentence. The 85-year-old father was spared from serving out his sentence in 2020, but despite his health issues, he was unable to leave Iran.
“Siamak Namazi is at home with his family in Tehran for the first time in seven years,” the lawyer for the two men continued.

American Baqer Namazi was freed from Iran after six years.
