Ukraine: Russian forces arrest the general manager of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant

Ihor Murashov, the general manager of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power station, was detained by a Russian patrol, according to Energoatum, the state-owned nuclear energy business of Ukraine. Moscow controls this facility.

Ihor Murashov was detained on his way from the station to (Enerhodar), according to Petro Kotin, the company’s head, in a statement carried by the Ukrainian news agency “Ukrinform” today, Saturday. Murashov’s car was stopped, forcibly detained, and taken blindfolded. At this time, there is no information regarding Murashov’s whereabouts or condition.

Kotin further stated that the general manager of the plant is solely responsible for nuclear and radiation safety at the facility, and that his detention endangers the operation of the biggest nuclear power plant in Europe. He urged the Russian army to free him.

Additionally, it urged Tom Mitchell, president of the International Federation of Nuclear Operators, and Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, to take all feasible steps to secure Morashov’s prompt release and enable him to resume his duties.
