Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry: Talks between France and Azerbaijan on border tensions with Armenia

Today, Thursday, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry announced that Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jehun Bayramov had met with the French President Isabelle Dumont’s adviser on continental Europe and Turkey to address changes in the situation between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

According to the ministry’s statement, which was carried by the Azerbaijani “Trend” news agency, the two sides discussed regional tension, political and economic cooperation between Azerbaijan and France, and the actions that must be taken to normalise ties between Baku and Yerevan.

Peramov briefed Dumont on Armenia’s provocations in the border provinces and Yerevan’s failure to uphold its obligations under the tripartite declarations (signed by the leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Russia), which hamper the two countries’ efforts to normalise relations, according to the statement.

According to the statement, the Azeri minister discussed various topics, including maintaining regional stability, establishing contact with Armenia, the border demarcation procedure, and the peace deal.
According to the statement, Dumont put emphasis on the necessity of stabilising the situation in the region, upholding the ceasefire agreement, and resuming peace talks. She also reaffirmed France’s willingness to support the peace process in the area.

It is notable that President Ilham Aliyev spoke by phone with his French colleague Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday to address the recent tensions on the border with Armenia, as reported by the Azerbaijani media.
She stated that the recent border conflicts between Azerbaijan and Armenia were reviewed, as well as the possibility of resuming peace negotiations between Baku and Yerevan.

Taking note of the fact that its army positions “were bombed, mainly with mortars,” the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry earlier charged the Armenian forces with committing “large-scale acts of sabotage” close to the border districts of Dasheksan, Kalpajar, and Lachin.
