Peruvian president considers canceling water rights of southern mining company

According to a letter received by Bloomberg News from regional councillor Elmer Pinto, Peruvian President Pedro Castillo will meet with representatives and officials from the government of the southern province of Islay on next Tuesday to discuss water rights granted to the Culavico copper mine.
The territorial authorities want the Culavco mine’s water rights revoked by the Peruvian government.

Anglo American Colafco, a joint venture between Japan’s Mitsubishi Corporation and Anglo American Mining, which owns 60% and 40% respectively, respectively, of the mine, is the property owner.
Next year, Culavco copper mining is anticipated to contribute 0.7% of the nation’s GDP.

The president of Peru is thinking of revoking the southern mining company’s water rights.
