On Thursday, the Referees Council at the International Atomic Energy Agency adopted a new decision calling on Russia to withdraw from the Zaburigia nuclear plant and stop what it is doing against nuclear sites in Ukraine, according to diplomatic sources.
Two diplomats said that the decision submitted by Canada and Finland was approved by 24 states of the council out of 35, and Russia and China voted against it.
Seven countries abstained from voting, Pakistan, India, South Africa, Namibia, Kenya, Vietnam and Saudi Arabia, with the absence of two states.
The agency had previously adopted two decisions in the same file, the first in March and the second in September, with fears of a nuclear accident caused by the Russian bombing in Ukraine.
In the new decision, the International Atomic Energy Agency Council expresses its “great concern” that Russia refused to stop its attacks on Ukrainian nuclear facilities.
Russia calls for “to give up its baseless demands regarding the Zaburigia station, withdraw its forces and crew immediately and stop any activity” against the stations in Ukraine.
There is a special concern about the Zaburigia station, the largest in Europe.
It has been occupied by Russian forces since the beginning of March and is located in one of the areas that Russia has annexed, specifically in a place not far from the seam dividing line between the regions controlled by Kyiv and those occupied by the Russians.
The station is subject to a regular shelling that the two parties are responsible for.
There are inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency at the station since the beginning of September.
The Director General of the UN agency, Rafael Grossi, has been under negotiations for weeks to create a safe area around the site.
