The United Nations to Iran: immediately released the detained demonstrators

On Tuesday, the United Nations called for the immediate release of thousands of detainees against the background of their participation in peaceful demonstrations throughout Iran.
The United Nations Commission for Human Rights said that one of the demonstrators was sentenced to death.

Meanwhile, UNHCR spokesman Jeremy Lawrence told reporters in Geneva: “We urge the authorities to immediately release all detainees against the background of peaceful protests and drop the charges against them,” adding that “the human rights law protects people’s right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression,” according to France Press.

Lawrence also confirmed the issuance of more than a thousand indictment against detainees related to the protests in Tehran Governorate alone, adding that “crimes that do not directly and deliberately lead to death cannot be used as a basis for the death penalty.


He added: “Therefore, we call on the Iranian authorities to stop the issuance of the death penalty, and to refrain from charges of being punished with death, and to cancel the death sentences issued by crimes that are not considered the most serious crimes.


He also revealed that the death toll this year exceeded that recorded during the 2019 demonstrations in Iran, which amounted to 324 people, explaining that “until November 12, the excessive use of force for force killed at least 326 people, including 43 children and 25 women.


It is noteworthy that since the killing of a 22 -year -old Kurdish young woman, Mhusa Amini, on September 16th, 3 days after she was arrested by the Ethics Police during a visit to Tehran with her younger brother, by claiming that she violated the strict clothing rules imposed, and the demonstrations were not subside in the country.
Her death has ignited unprecedented protests 3 years ago, most often advanced by the young segment in the country.

While the security forces violently confronted the protesters, killing hundreds of them. It also arrested at least 14,170 people, including 392 students, in those protests that came out in 136 cities, town and 134 universities, according to the Human Rights Activists News Agency..
