The German Minister of Economy welcomes the withdrawal of his country from the Energy Charter Treaty

German Economy Minister Robert Habik described the German ruling coalition agreement to redirect the country’s commercial policy and withdraw from the controversial energy charter treaty, as a qualitative shift.

The minister, who belongs to the Green Party, said today, Saturday, in Singapore: “We are constantly as our commercial policy with climate protection,” adding that the agreement is a clear indication that the ruling coalition wants to promote trade and partnerships on the basis of justice and sustainability.
Habik is currently participating in a German economic activity conference in the Asia-Pacific region of Singapore.

Habik described the withdrawal from the Energy Charter Treaty as a logical step, adding that he has always criticized his party and environmental organizations this treaty.
The treaty allows investors, for example, to prosecute countries against arbitration bodies.

Katrina Dragha, leader of the Greens Parliamentary Bloc, said that there is no other international trade or investment agreement that caused lawsuits to be filed by more investors than the Energy Charter Treaty, and added that there is no other agreement that is more harmful to the climate than this charter, as I talked about A “great reference” parallel to the World Climate Conference in Egypt..
