Al-Madinah News:- Lebanese caretaker government, Naguib Mikati, said- in an interview with Al-Jazeera- that a new president of the republic must be elected immediately for the regularity of political action.
Mikati stressed the need for the President of the Republic to be acceptable to everyone, and that he should not be “the head of a challenge to anyone”, as he put it.
On the candidate personalities, Mikati said that there is a “historical relationship” that has the head of the Marada Movement Suleiman Franjieh, and added, “I hope that he will be President of the Republic. ”
The caretaker government believed that part of the crisis suffered by Lebanon is caused by the deterioration of its relationship with the Arab countries.
Lebanon entered the beginning of this month a presidential vacancy phase with the end of the mandate of President Michel Aoun, due to the lack of a candidate capable of collecting the required majority in Parliament.
This is the sixth presidential vacancy in the modern history of Lebanon, but it differs from its predecessors that it coincides with a government that is ruling, after the parliamentary elections held last May.
Regarding the energy crisis in Lebanon, Mikati said that he would formally address the United States to inquire about the possibility of Lebanon to submit to sanctions if he accepted the gift of Iranian oil.
He added that “Lebanon is not subject to an American siege, and we will not expose it to any risks. ”
The Lebanese government has been seeking oil supplies from Iran to operate power stations, in light of a severe crisis in the country for nearly a year and a half.
The energy crisis is among the repercussions of the grinding economic crisis that the country has suffered since 2019, which has caused a financial collapse and a sharp decline in foreign exchange reserves.
Regarding the local currency crisis, Mikati told the island that the official exchange rate of the dollar will be adjusted gradually in the coming months.
