Thousands of Nova Scotia Power customers in the dark Saturday

Following the storm Nicole, which brought strong winds and rain to the area, thousands of Nova Scotia Power customers are without power as of Saturday.
At 11 a.m. on Saturday, there were 46 outages across the province, affecting more than 9,000 customers, according to the Nova Scotia Power outage map.
Customers in the Halifax and Cape Breton regions make up the majority of those affected. The utility said the outages in Cape Breton were caused by “high winds and rain,” while the Halifax outages are being investigated.

More than 13,000 customers were without power earlier in the day.
Nicole gained hurricane status on Thursday over Florida, but by Friday morning it had degraded to a tropical depression. The Canadian Hurricane Centre predicted that Nicole would become a post-tropical storm on Friday night.
On Friday, Environment Canada issued tropical cyclone statements for the province.

“Very mild, tropical temperatures and gusty winds over Nova Scotia (around 60 km/h) on the warm side of the system and strong, cold northeasterly winds on the north side of the system,” it warned of rain and wind over the Maritime provinces.
A rain warning is still in effect for the entire province, and Saturday is expected to bring anywhere from 40 to 60 millimetres of rain to the area.
The rain is expected to taper to drizzle in the evening.

Due to the weather forecast, the Department of Community Services in Nova Scotia has opened warming centres at two locations: the Elizabeth Seton Church on 125 Metropolitan Avenue in Lower Sackville and the overnight shelter at 2029 North Park Street in Halifax.

Numerous Nova Scotia Power customers were left in the dark on Saturday.
