The United Nations calls on all actors to accelerate the removal of obstacles to export fertilizers for the most needy

The United Nations has urged all parties to swiftly remove any remaining barriers to fertiliser export and transportation to the world’s most impoverished nations.

This information was contained in a statement released by the UN today, on Saturday, in Geneva, following a round of negotiations that included Martin Griffith and Rebecca Greenban, the Secretary-General of UNCTAD. The statement praised Antonio Guterres, the UN secretary-general, for his efforts to ensure that the signed agreements on the export of grain, food, and fertiliser from Russia and Ukraine are fully implemented.

According to the statement, the meeting covered the issue of facilitating the unhindered export of food and fertilizers, including ammonia from the Russian Federation to international markets, as well as the development of related discussions.

Noting that the United Nations team provided a briefing on the measures taken to facilitate payments, secure shipping, and provide access to the union’s ports for European grains and fertilizer, among other things, as well as the UN, the most recent licences issued, fertiliser shipments to developing country destinations, and their ongoing collaboration with the private sector and member states.

The United Nations expected – in its statement – that the first shipment of fertilizers donated to Malawi will leave next week, and confirmed that it is still committed to addressing the global fertilizer market crisis, especially for the needs of farmers with small holders from the developing world who suffer due to the high costs of inputs.
The international organisation emphasised that a global food shortage cannot be allowed to result from lack of access to fertilisers worldwide.

The United Nations calls on all parties to swiftly remove barriers to fertiliser export for those in need.
