Algerian Minister of Justice: Freedom of opinion and expression should not be a tool for sabotage and spread violence and hatred

Abdel-Rashid Medical, the justice minister of Algeria, emphasised that freedom of speech should not be used for sabotage or to incite violence or hate speech in a way that threatens national societies. He also reaffirmed his nation’s unwavering commitment to working to advance and defend human rights.

This came during his speech on the occasion of submitting the comprehensive periodic report for human rights in his country during the evaluation course by the peer of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland.
According to Tabi, the objective of this report is to “give an honest picture of the achievements made in the field of human rights since the presentation of the third report in May 2017.”

The justice minister of Algeria noted that the reforms incorporated into the 2020 constitution allowed for the consolidation of fundamental rights and public freedoms, strengthening the harmony between the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government, as well as bolstering the independence of the judiciary, advancing human rights, and including the populace in decision-making.

Medical emphasised that his country rejects any imposition of a single, unified model for social or political organisation or a unilateral view of foreign values that do not recognise the philosophical, civilizational, historical, cultural, social, and religious privacy of countries and supports the principle of “global human rights.”

The justice minister of Algeria stated that “respecting the heavenly religions and their symbols should not violate the pretext of freedom of opinion and expression, out of respect for the beliefs of peoples,” adding that democracy cannot tolerate behaviour that violates human dignity or freedom of opinion and expression based on calls for rebellion or even separation or for other reasons and attempts to thwart the electoral process
