People gather at Edmonton City Hall for Remembrance Day ceremony

Numerous people gathered in front of Edmonton City Hall on Friday morning for a Remembrance Day service, many of them military veterans and officers with poppies pinned to their winter coats.
As soldiers marched into the plaza to remember those who have died in conflicts all over the world, their footsteps reverberated throughout Churchill Square.
Gun shots from a ceremonial salute at the nearby Alberta legislature grounds could be heard in the distance.

Provincial and municipal officials, as well as members of the families of the deceased soldiers, also laid wreaths at a cenotaph.
The Royal Edmonton Regiment’s Capt. Ryna Brideau-Thombs expressed her happiness at seeing so many people brave the cold to attend the in-person service, which was the first since the COVID-19 pandemic.
She said being outside for a couple hours was worth it to honour those who died.

The ability to have everyone back in person for this event means a lot to us, according to Brideau-Thombs. “The thing that makes it really important is to have the city and the community out and celebrate with us and remember with us,” she said.

The day was also a time to think back on good memories with those who returned from war, she added.

Many members of the community visit us to express their gratitude for our service, she said.
“They talk about some of their friends and their family members, and it’s always really heartwarming to see. ”.
