Officials: Us Sending Ukraine $ 670 million in military aid

The US will provide Ukraine an additional US$400 million (NZ$667 million) in military aid. Amid worries that financial support for the war against Russia might slightly decrease if Republicans take control of Congress, US officials said on Thursday (local time).
The results of Tuesday’s election are still being counted, and an announcement is imminent. The Republicans are edging closer to a slim majority in the House, and the control of the Senate depends on the outcome of close races in Arizona, Nevada, and Georgia.

Officials claim that the aid package will include a significant quantity of ammunition as well as highly mobile Avenger air defence systems for the first time. The High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, or Himars, which Ukraine has been successfully employing in its counteroffensive against Russia, will have ammunition, according to officials. There Also Will Be Mortars and Missiles for The Hawk Surface-To-Air Anti-Aircraft System.

The arrival of the extra ammunition and air defence capabilities coincides with the Russian troops’ widening withdrawal from Kherson, a strategic Ukrainian city, which may signal a turning point in the war. Kherson is the only provincial capital that Moscow managed to seize, and the Russian withdrawal may provide Ukraine the chance to reclaim lost territory in the south. Although they acknowledged that Moscow’s forces had no choice but to flee Kherson, Ukrainian officials remained cautious out of concern for an ambush.

With the most recent assistance, the US has given Ukraine more than US$18.6 billion (NZ$31 billion) worth of weapons and other equipment since Russia attacked on February 24. According to officials, the new aid package will be delivered under the presidential drawdown authority, which permits the Pentagon to quickly ship weapons to Ukraine by taking them out of its own stock.

President Joe Biden expressed his hope that ongoing assistance to Ukraine would continue on Wednesday (local time), even if the Republicans took control of one or both houses of Congress.
The Democratic President told reporters, “I Hope We’ll Continue This Bipartisan Approach of Confronting Russia’s Aggressive in Ukraine.”
