Unique 1st edition US Constitution could fetch up to $30M at Sotheby’s

November 7, 2022, CAIRO One of just two known copies of the original United States Constitution, which was signed 235 years ago at Independence Hall in Philadelphia by the country’s founding fathers, has been made public by Sotheby’s.
According to Sotheby’s, this variation will be put up for auction on December 13 in a special live broadcast sale in New York for the first time in more than 125 years.
The announcement comes on the heels of the historic sale of Goldman’s Constitution, which sold for $43.

2 million, breaking the previous auction record for any book, manuscript, or printed text.
The current copy of the constitution is an especially fascinating source because it seems to be the first edition that historical and collecting organisations have accepted as an official edition of the document.
It last appeared at auction in Philadelphia in 1894, as part of the legendary collection of Charles Colcock Jones, Georgia attorney, politician and amateur historian.

Adrian Van Sinderen, an American businessman and civic leader, had purchased this copy. He developed a passion for American history and books, becoming one of the most renowned book collectors in the entire world.
The current version of the US Constitution is on view to the public at Sotheby’s until November 22..
