Democracy is on the ballot in U.S. midterms with ‘conspiracy’ candidates: David Frum

According to political commentator David Frum, a strong showing by Republican candidates who subscribe to conspiracies during next week’s midterm elections in the United States could exacerbate existing democratisation problems.
His concern comes as multiple candidates in midterm races across the country, “who believe in all kinds of QAnon conspiracy theories,” Frum said, and have supported former U. S. president Donald Trump’s false assertion that the 2020 presidential election was stolen.

In an interview on The West Block that aired on Sunday, Frum said, “A lot of people who are loyal to president Trump did try, back then, to reverse (the) election.”
“They lacked the necessary power to complete it. However, based on the outcomes of 2022, they might be able to in 2024.
He claimed that candidates who Frum referred to as “pro-Trump weirdos” have been stacked in a number of lower-profile elections.

They believe in these disproved conspiracies, he claimed, and one of the main objectives of pro-Trump Republicans is to elect these people.
If the Republicans have a successful year in 2022, as it appears they will, they will elect a large number of these individuals to conduct elections in a manner that is aggressively unjust and that will disregard the wishes of the electorate, according to Frum.
Next week, Americans will vote in a general election for the first time since January.

When a pro-Trump crowd overran Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. on June 6, 2021.
Frum isn’t the only person who, with the events of January 6 fresh in their minds, describes the election as a crucial struggle for democracy. President of the United States Joe Biden made a similar cautionary statement on Wednesday.
We don’t frequently have to decide if our vote will protect democracy or endanger it in a typical year, he remarked.
But this year, we are.

If Trump decides to run again in 2024, it will be “one of the single most important topics in American politics,” according to Frum.
The latest instance of political violence in the country occurred when a man beat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband during a break-in at their house, according to many people, including U.S. Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger.

Prosecutors, who called the event a politically motivated assault, submitted court documents stating that the attacker admitted to the police that he had planned to kidnap the speaker, question her, and break her kneecaps if she “lied” to him.
According to Frum, the odds of the Republicans winning the House next week are “near definite,” and while it’s not impossible for the Democrats to keep control of the Senate, it’s more likely that the Republicans will win both houses.

Files from The Associated Press were included.
