9 years after his death .. The Taliban reveals the location of its founder

On Sunday, the Taliban in Afghanistan disclosed the location of the movement’s founder, Mullah Omar, whose demise is still unsolved and whose body has been interred covertly for years.
After the US-led war that toppled the Taliban in 2001, rumours abounded over Mullah Omar’s wellbeing and whereabouts until the movement’s leaders finally acknowledged his passing in April 2015.

For his part, the Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, told AFP on Sunday that important figures in the organisation were present at a ceremony held on Sunday around his tomb outside of Amrzo in the Zabul district.
“The location of the cemetery remained a secret to prevent damage because there were several adversaries there and the country was invaded. The close family members only know the place,” Mujahid said.

The Taliban leaders can be seen gathered around a plain white grave that is enclosed in a green iron cage in the images released by the authorities. The spokesperson stated, “Now that the decision has been taken, there is no longer a difficulty with visiting people at the grave.”
The Taliban regained power in August 2021, which led to the withdrawal of the US -led coalition forces after 20 years.

The Taliban, which Mullah Omar, who passed away in 2005 at the age of 55, founded in 1993 and took control of in 1996 following a protracted civil war, erected a system based on a rigorous application of Sharia.
