Unnamed talks between Washington and Moscow to bridge the rift in Ukraine

According to The Wall Street Journal, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan engaged in secret discussions about military escalation in Ukraine and nuclear threats with senior Russian president advisers.
The National Security Advisor and the Russian President’s aides discussed ways to lessen the possibility of a wider confrontation in Ukraine and Moscow’s caution against the use of nuclear weapons, according to the newspaper.

According to The Washington Post, the administration of US President Joe Biden advised Ukraine’s leaders to publicly reject taking part in peace negotiations until President Vladimir Putin was gone from office and instead announce their willingness to negotiate with Russia.

The appeal from US officials, according to individuals involved with the conversations, is not intended to put pressure on Ukraine to participate in negotiations; rather, it is a deliberate move to keep Kyiv’s support from other nations who are concerned about igniting the conflict for years to come.

She claimed that the discussions demonstrated just how difficult the Biden administration was on Kyiv given that US officials have publicly committed to providing Kyiv with significant aid for “as long as possible” in an effort to find a resolution to the crisis that began eight months ago, caused significant damage to the world economy, and sparked worries about the possibility of a nuclear exchange.

According to the publication, US officials agreed with their Ukrainian colleagues that Putin was not currently willing to engage in dialogue.
