BGC Okanagan receives $10,000 grant for youth recreation programming

A $10,000 grant was given to BGC Okanagan to help them develop their programme to offer adolescent drop-in recreation programmes at the Summerland Youth Centre.
Over 70 registered charities and non-profits, including BGC Okanagan, received one of Rogers Communications’ 2022 Ted Rogers Community Grants, the company announced on Friday.
In the fields of education, digital literacy, health, athletics, and business, the grant programme assists young people aged 15 to 29.

“Thanks to Rogers, this programme is available to participants at no cost, offering a secure environment free from barriers where adolescents can participate in recreation and life-skills programmes. According to Kristy Butterworth, director of youth services at BGC Okanagan, “activities are planned to actively emphasise the significance of physical and mental health, leadership and life-skills, creative arts and expression, healthy relationships, and contributing back to society.”

The continuation of this programme, which provides young people with access to supportive mentorship and activities outside of school hours, is crucial.
When funding was intermittently available to operate the youth drop-in programme, BGC Okanagan provided 43 youth with 482 services.
As teenage leadership and volunteerism are ingrained in the programme, BGC Okanagan said they intend to concentrate on community partnerships and volunteer opportunities this year.

According to Butterworth, the program’s objective is for adolescents to connect with their peers, interact with supportive adults, and gain leadership and life skills through access.
“Youth can develop a sense of community among themselves as well as a stronger connection to the larger community of Summerland by participating in a local youth centre.”
Numerous youth-supporting programmes have received Ted Rogers Community Grants since 2017 from Rogers.

In 250 towns around the nation, the press release states that this year’s recipient organisations will assist more than 50,000 youngsters.

A grant of $10,000 is given to BGC Okanagan for its youth recreation initiatives.
