Why did the United States ask Ukraine “secretly” to express openness to negotiate with Russia?

According to The Washington Post, Joe Biden, the vice president in charge of negotiations with Russia, covertly requested that Ukraine’s leaders drop their public objections to taking part in peace negotiations until President Vladimir Putin had been ousted from office.

The appeal from US officials, according to individuals involved with the conversations, is not intended to put pressure on Ukraine to participate in negotiations; rather, it is a deliberate move to keep Kyiv’s support from other nations who are concerned about igniting the conflict for years to come.

The discussions, according to her, demonstrated how difficult the Biden administration was on Ukraine given that US officials have publicly committed to providing Kyiv with significant aid for “as long as possible” while they work to find a resolution to the ongoing conflict, which has cost the world economy significantly and sparked worries about the possibility of a nuclear exchange.

According to the publication, US officials agreed with their Ukrainian counterparts’ assertion that Putin was not now interested in dialogue.
They did, however, acknowledge that Ukrainian President Foludmir Zellinski’s refusal to engage in negotiations with him caused anxiety in sections of Europe, Africa, and Latin America, where the effects of war have considerably increased the price of food and fuel.

After next Tuesday’s congressional midterm elections, according to Jake Sullivan, US national security adviser, Washington’s support for Ukraine would continue to be “strong and robust.”

Why did the US ask Ukraine “covertly” to indicate that it was willing to engage with Russia?
