Republican Liz Cheney endorses Democrat in US midterm elections

Rep. Liz Cheney, a US Republican, once again reached across the aisle in this election season to support a Democratic colleague running for the House of Representatives. On Saturday (local time), Cheney endorsed Abigail Spanberger, a former CIA officer running for a third term in a recently redrew district in northern Virginia.

Cheney, who lost to a Trump-backed rival in her Wyoming primary in August, said in a statement that Spanberger was committed to finding solutions and “dedicated to serving this country and her constituents and defending our Constitution.” Cheney is the vice chair of the House committee looking into the Capitol riot and an outspoken critic of former President Donald Trump.

“Yesli Vega, a county commissioner and former police officer who has recently received Trump’s support, is the GOP contender in Virginia’s 7th Congressional District, which is centred on the Interstate 95 corridor in exurban Washington and rural towns to the east and west.
Cheney claimed Vega in a statement released by Spanberger’s campaign “is advancing conspiracies, contesting election results, and standing up for the irrational.

“We need our elected leaders to be honest, serious, and responsible,” Cheney continued. “Therefore, I implore the people of Virginia’s 7th District to endorse Abigail Spanberger.”
Vega asserted during her primary campaign that there was proof “indicate[ing] that the election of 2020 was interfered with. But she said that she didn’t think the election had been rigged.

Vega has also faced persistent criticism from Spanberger and other Democrats over remarks — not specifically mentioned in Cheney’s endorsement — in which Vega indulged the notion that pregnancy could be less likely in cases of rape.
Cheney “understands that my work for Virginia is built in the philosophy of always putting our country first — over party,” according to centrist Spanberger.

In response, the Vega campaign stated that Virginians “know Yesli is going to Washington to fight for people, not a political party” and that they “do not trust the lies” from Cheney or Spanberger.
Cheney officially endorsed Michigan Representative Elissa Slotkin in October, marking the first time the Republican had done so. She also recently visited Michigan to campaign with Slotkin.

Cheney made a notable decision not to support Elaine Luria, a fellow member of the January 6 committee and a centrist Democrat running in a tight race, on Saturday (Washington time). In the 2nd Congressional District on Virginia’s coast, state senator Jen Kiggans runs against Luria.
There are currently no plans for Cheney to enter the race, according to Luria spokeswoman Jayce Genco. A spokesman for Cheney, Jeremy Adler, declined comment beyond the written statement.

The former president is also anticipated to run for president in 2024, as Cheney previously stated she is thinking about doing so.
There is no proof that there was widespread fraud, dishonesty, or voting machine manipulation in the 2020 election.
Comprehensive investigations in the states where Trump contested the results affirmed Democrat Joe Biden’s victory, and multiple courts, including those nominated by Republicans, rejected legal challenges brought by the former president and his allies.

The Washington Post was the first outlet to report about Cheney’s support for Spanberger.

In the US midterm elections, Republican Liz Cheney backs the Democratic Party.
