Egypt’s Suez Canal to hold panel discussion at COP 27 on green solutions, investment opportunities

CAIRO – 5 November 2022: The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) will host a panel discussion on November 11 at the Green Zone of COP 27 titled “The Leading Role of the Suez Canal in Maintaining Sustainable Green Supply Chains.”

The environmental issues that the maritime transportation sector is experiencing will be covered, as well as various perspectives on how to take use of advances in shipbuilding technology to produce new generations of ships that adhere to the necessary environmental requirements.
The panel will also discuss the Suez Canal Economic Zone’s potential opportunities (SCzone).

Those can support global supply chains and trade in an effective and sustainable manner, and are fully aligned with the initiatives adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
In addition, the panel will discuss the steps that must be taken going forward to ensure sustainable development and mitigate the dangers of climate change.

Ossama Rabiee, chairman of the SCA, Guy Platten, secretary general of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), Arsenio Dominguez, director of the IMO’s marine environment division, Martin Bo Christiansen, vice president and head of decarbonization at Moller-Maersk, and Georgios Plevrakis, vice president of the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), will be the panellists.

In March, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed to manufacture green hydrogen that will be used to power ships in front of Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli.
The General Authority for the Suez Canal, the Sovereign Fund of Egypt, the New and Renewable Energy Authority, and the Egyptian Company for Electricity Transmission are the signing parties on one side, while Maersk is on the other.

The representative of Maersk stated that the company is preparing 12 ships to be powered by green hydrogen, and that it is interested in building a plant that produces green fuel in Ain Sokhna’s economic zone. She further stated that Maersk aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040.

COP 27 panel discussion on green solutions and investment prospects will be held in Egypt’s Suez Canal.
