In 1907, he worked as a correspondent for a New York newspaper and attended Peter Jesuit College in Jersey City and the University of Colombia in New York. However, he found the work to be too taxing for him to continue, so in 1913, he was content to teach Latin, French, English, and other subjects at “Sixty Hall” while concentrating his studies to earn a degree from Columbia University.

After receiving a doctorate, he started giving lectures on philosophy and literature. These lectures paved the way for the publication of his books “The Story of Philosophy” and “The Story of Civilization,” as the majority of the audience members were workers and other professionals whose jobs required them to be completely clear and relate what they said to recent accidents.
