Group says Montreal cops should apologize to Black man suspected of stealing own car

A Black man who was handcuffed on Thursday because officers thought he was trying to steal his own automobile, according to a Montreal anti-racism group, should receive an apology from the city police.
The man questions officers in a video of the event that is becoming viral on social media if they handcuffed him because he is Black.
The cops had to call a patrol car to help them unlock the man’s handcuffs after they made the decision to let him go, as seen in the video.

The coroner of Quebec has opened a public inquiry into a deadly 2017 Montreal police assistance
Montreal police acknowledged the video in a post on Twitter, saying officers found a vehicle in a mall parking lot that had marks on it suggesting it had been stolen. They claim that after being held for questioning, the individual was eventually freed without being charged.

Alain Babineau, the racial profiling and public safety director at anti-racial profiling group Red Coalition and a 27-year veteran of the RCMP, says that when someone is subject to investigative detention by police they must be allowed to leave. Additionally, he claims that although while police can handcuff someone who is a threat, doing so turns the contact into an arrest.

Babineau, who left the federal police department to become a lawyer, questions whether the man was handcuffed because the cops believe that Black men are inherently dangerous.

A group claims that the alleged owner of the car should get an apology from the Montreal police.
