The Governor of South Sinai, Major General Khaled Fouda, said that Sharm El-Sheikh is fully prepared to host the “COP27” Conference on Sunday after transforming it into a safe, smart, and environmentally friendly city.

In an interview with the Emirates News Agency «WAM» in his office in Sharm El-Sheikh, Fouda reviewed the efforts that were made in preparation for hosting “COP27,” and he noted that Sharm El-Sheikh was re-planned, expanded, and paved for more than 230 km, adopted smart transportation, renewable energy, waste management, and green spaces, and increased The capacity of Sharm El-Sheikh Airport to 10 million passengers annually, between May and November this year.

The Sharm El-Sheikh city has more than 1,000 cameras connected to the security monitoring network to achieve the highest security standards, and to follow the entire city round-the-clock. The South Sinai Governor praised the concerted efforts to put Sharm El-Sheikh on the map of the world and become the centre of attention of the world.

He pointed out that since Saturday, taxi drivers have been required to wear a uniform and emphasised how contemporary methods have allowed for electronic payment and the availability of cameras inside the taxis to safeguard both the passenger and the driver from any violations.

According to Fouda, turning Sharm El Sheikh into a green city involved increasing hotel efficiency, running more than 90% of them on solar power, providing high-speed internet and powering buses through ten stations that offer “gasoline, gas, and electricity,” as well as 18 shipping points in hotels and parking.

According to Fouda, 260 public transportation vehicles have been used, including 140 electric buses, 120 gas buses, and 140 sheets. All of these vehicles transport people for free and continuously travel to and from the Sharm El Sheikh International Convention Center. 800 cabs were changed to run on gas rather than gasoline.

The establishment of a 12-km global tourist walkway in both directions, which included three regions, the “Participatory Bike” walkway, which is powered by the smart card, the tourist walkway, and the provision of services and food and consumer goods were among the development operations that were carried out during the current year, he noted.

On the occasion of the third anniversary of the founding and holding of the World Camel Festival in January 2020, the Governor of South Sinai announced that Egypt will organise an Arab and international festival for camels and heritage in January 2023. He explained that the President and the participating nations’ cultures would be represented in the next iteration of the camel festival.

He stated that the message that Egypt offers to the world during “COP27” is concentrated in providing a model for environmentally friendly cities, and that the Egyptian will is able to achieve the achievements of teamwork, noting the start of going to convert new cities in Egypt into green cities during the coming period, including Hurghada and Luxor, and others cities with the catchphrase “turns green.”
