Libya seizes a large amount of drugs coming from Turkey

In the largest smuggling of these goods, which the authorities are battling attempts to distribute and consume in the nation, the Public Prosecution in the Libyan city of Misurata announced the seizure of large quantities of hashish and drugs in a shipment of goods in the port of Misurata coming from Turkey.

“The prosecutor in the East Misurata Prosecution Prosecution has received a report from the Misurata Maritime Customs Center and the strength of joint operations, with the presence of a quantity of drugs and mental effects hidden in a container dedicated to transporting goods coming from Turkey,” the spokeswoman said.

In a statement, she continued, “the seizures were intended to arrest and bring the rest of the accused, while the interrogation operations resulted in the detention of one of those involved in the incident.”
14,910 pieces of hashish and 829 thousand and 830 pills were seized; they were intended for both domestic consumption and cross-border smuggling to neighbouring nations.

The sale of drugs and hashish has grown significantly in popularity in Libya over the past few years, becoming one of the key ways that terrorist organisations, gangs, armed militias, and extremist organisations are funded.
One of the causes of the rise in Libyan smuggling is the security failure that has occurred since 2011.

The unstable security situation made it easier for drug traffickers to go to Europe, where 42 tonnes of cocaine were seized between 2019 and 2021, according to a United Nations assessment published early this year.
