As part of the internet giant’s continued growth in Canada, Google has opened the doors to its new, large office in Montreal.
The five-floored new workspace on Viger Street was opened for business on Wednesday. The opening comes less than two years after the announcement that the company was going to bolster its presence in the country with three new offices in Quebec and Ontario.
The sprawling space was designed to emphasize sustainability and pay tribute to the city.
Additionally, it draws inspiration from a couple of Montreal’s diverse neighbourhoods, such as Little Italy and Chinatown.
Some of the details pay homage to the well-known, vivid red Farine Five Roses sign, while a fleur-de-lys, a symbol of the province’s flag, is painted on a blue wall. The business also decided to decorate the space with artwork created by regional artisans.
In the year 2001, Google initially entered the nation. The first office in Montreal opened three years later with just three employees.
It stated in February 2020 that it was adding this area to the city office.
The most recent facility will now house several teams within the business that work on numerous different Google projects. Although the facility has room for up to 1,000 people, the tech giant only employs roughly 300 individuals there.
If extra space is needed, the company might also choose to lease it from the building.
It is somewhat of a Catch 22.
It’s more challenging to persuade teams from around the world to come and settle in Montreal if there isn’t space.
In conjunction with the opening, the business disclosed that it would spend $2.75 million on different projects and awards to “deepen support for Quebec’s technology ecosystem.” Part of the money will be used for Montreal’s Artificial Intelligence Institute (MILA).
After almost 20 years, according to Sabrina Geremia, vice-president and managing director at Google Canada, they see themselves as a “anchor tenant of this fantastic community” and feel it’s necessary to give back.
She stated, “We’re assembling some of the world’s best and brightest minds in this new headquarters to make goods for the world.
“But it’s also about investing in the community.
We want Montreal to develop and maintain its position as a global leader in technological advancement.
