Tunisia: The energy sector is the main engine for the economic cycle

The energy industry, according to Tunisia’s Minister of Industry, Mines, and Energy Naela Nuwaira Al-Qanji, is a crucial part of both the nation’s economic cycle and its overall security.

In light of the changes taking place in the world, particularly in light of the effects of the global health crisis (Kovid-19), the Russian-Ukrainian crisis, the high global oil and gas prices, and the pressures on the global energy market, the minister continued, Tunisia faces a number of economic and social challenges.

This was said in a speech to the minister during a workshop on the realities of the fuel industry and the partial revision project for hydrocarbons, which also included representatives from the Institute for the Governance of Natural Resources in Tunisia, the presidency of the government, the ministries of justice, finance, and the environment, as well as civil society groups focused on transparency, governance, and development.

The workshop covered the realities and difficulties facing the energy sector, which has seen a decline in research and exploration activities (3 exploratory wells and 4 development since 2010), as well as a reduction in field production capacity and an increase in consumption that has exacerbated the energy balance deficit by more than 50%.

The minister added that, despite the main energy firms’ efforts to develop clean, renewable energy, the sector that produces fuels continues to play a vital role in attaining energy security.

Tunisia’s primary economic driver is the energy sector.
