Ottawa raises immigration targets with new goal of 500K per year by 2025

By 2025, the federal government hopes to see 500,000 immigrants arrive annually, which represents a significant increase in the number of individuals coming to Canada.
The decision, according to Immigration Minister Sean Fraser, is vital to ensure Canada’s economic growth. He announced the revised targets on Tuesday.
A million job openings across Canada indicate that there is a severe labour shortage in the country’s industries.

The new strategy emphasises boosting the number of immigrants who will be admitted during the following three years based on their work abilities or expertise.
The number of family members who will be allowed entry into the nation will slightly increase under Ottawa’s plans, but the number of refugees will somewhat decline.
The new strategy was announced just days after Statistics Canada revealed that a record 23% of the population is made up of landed immigrants or permanent residents.

Ottawa had previously set immigration goals for 2021, 2022, and 2023 that called for 401,000, 411,000, and 421,000 new permanent residents, respectively.
Ottawa revised these targets in a Feb. 14 update, setting them at 431,645 new permanent residents in 2022, 447,055 in 2023, and 451,000 in 2024.
More to come.

Ottawa increases immigration targets, setting a new objective of 500K year by 2025.
