CAIRO – 31 October 2022: In Turkey, archaeologists came across a mosaic that shows a skeleton from the Roman period.
Ancient mosaics from the Hatay province, where the mosaic was found, are well-known. “Fun work of art” was used to characterise the skeleton mosaic. The mosaic, which was the third-largest in the world during the Roman era, was found next to the dining room of a modern home in Antiochia.
The happy skeleton is holding a beverage with the Greek phrase “Be joyful, enjoy life,” which denotes comedy. It paints a picture of the hedonistic lifestyle of the third century BC, according to archaeologists.
The “fun” artwork was originally situated in a home’s dining room. According to Demet Kara, an archaeologist from the Hatay Archeology Museum, mosaic arts were taught in schools during the Roman era.
The skeleton stands out as “fun” since it does not fit into either of the two categories of Roman mosaics, which frequently include images from daily life while other mosaics feature elaborate geometric patterns.
Kara said that eating and bathing were significant activities for the Roman elite.
