Berlin: Extending the work of nuclear reactors has a little impact on electricity prices

According to estimations from the German government, the country’s surviving nuclear reactors’ continued operation will only have a minor effect on electricity costs.

Even though the reactors are still running at the moment, the Ministry of Economy claimed that the volatile gas market has significantly increased electricity prices over the past few months. In response, the ministry stated in a written statement that «the reason for this is that the gas stations that work with gas are the ones that determine the price Electricity on the stock exchange continuously.

The government believed that raising electricity tariffs rather than operating nuclear power facilities is the best way to address the high cost of electricity.

The decision by German Chancellor Olaf Schultz to extend the operation of the last three nuclear reactors until April 15th, 2019, was preceded by a protracted disagreement between Minister of Economy Robert Habik (of the Green Party) and Minister of Finance Christian Lindner (from the Free Democratic Party ).

The Shultz decision might be approved by the German parliament by the end of the second week of November, in which case the decision would be forwarded to the Council of State for a vote either later this month or sooner during an emergency session.

Berlin: The price of electricity is not significantly affected by the operation of nuclear reactors.
