The United Nations discusses the threats of terrorist use of drones

According to the Al-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper, the United Nations Committee to Combat Terrorism, a subcommittee of the UN Security Council, is debating the growing threat that new and emerging technology poses to the world during a meeting in India, including the use of drones by terrorist organisations.

The gathering coincides with international concerns about the use of drones by terrorist groups on the African continent, which has evolved into a new centre of gravity for these terrorist groups and is home to numerous civil wars and precarious governments.

On the website of the international organisation, the Indian representative to the UN, Ambassador Rochera Campog, made the following statements: “Attacks are being recorded in which drones are deployed in numerous conflict zones, which adds a complexity of its authorised use.

“The drones are distinguished by their permits for their relative costs to regular planes, as well as the simplicity of access to the technology utilised in their sector, which raises concerns about the likelihood that terrorist organisations will acquire this lethal weapon.
A report released by the Institute of Security Studies in Pretoria, South Africa, in the middle of October this year called attention to the growing evidence of drone use by terrorists and criminal organisations in Africa.

The report, titled “Armed Drones – the Latest Technical Threat to Africa,” noted that the ongoing Russian War highlighted the use of “drones” in the battlefield and that there is currently an arms race in the area of producing and acquiring it. It also noted that it is possible to purchase air conditioning and use drones to disable crucial infrastructure such as airports, power plants, and communications networks.

The possibility of drone usage by terrorists is discussed at the UN.
