AP source: Paul Pelosi attacker to be charged federally

According to a person familiar with the inquiry, the man accused of assaulting Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, will be charged on Monday with threatening the spouse of a federal official.
The 42-year-old David DePape will soon face federal charges after allegedly breaking into Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco home and hitting her 82-year-old husband with a hammer.

He needed surgery for a fractured skull after the attack left him gravely hurt, and he also sustained damage to his wrists and arms.
According to the person, who was not allowed to publicly discuss the inquiry, federal prosecutors will accuse DePape of threatening or harming a family member in order to influence, obstruct, or retaliate against a federal employee.

The district attorney of San Francisco is about to file state-level charges against DePape at the same time as the impending federal charge. He was arrested Friday on suspicion of attempted murder, elder abuse and burglary and is expected to be arraigned on state charges Tuesday.

Assailant was targeting the Democratic leader when he stormed into the couple’s home and accosted Paul Pelosi, according to San Francisco’s district attorney Brooke Jenkins, who also refuted conspiracy theories about the attack.
