Tunisia announces the frustration of 14 illegal immigration attempts and rescue 319 migrants from drowning

The Tunisian government said today, on Saturday, that there had been 14 attempts at illegal immigration across the Mediterranean border, and 319 individuals had been saved from drowning.

In a statement, the spokesperson for the General Administration of the Tunisian National Guard claimed that in the course of combating the issue of illegal immigration, units from the Maritime Guard provinces in the country’s centre, north, and coast were able to thwart 14 attempts to enter the country illegally through the sea as well as rescue and save 319 migrants.

The Naval Guard units in the centre, the spokesman continued, prevented six attempts to cross the maritime border illegally and prevented 230 immigrants from sub-Saharan nationalities from drowning after their boats capsized. The Naval Guard units in the coast, meanwhile, were able to prevent seven unauthorised crossings and save 83 immigrants from death, including seven sub-Saharan nationalities and 76 Tunisians after their boats also capsized.

The spokesman noted that once their boat was stopped, the northern maritime guards units were able to stop the covert and rescue maritime crossing procedure and save 6 migrants from drowning at sea.

Tunisia reports that 14 attempts at illegal immigration were unsuccessful and that 319 migrants were saved from drowning.
