The Lebanese President warns of “constitutional chaos”

News from Al-Madinah: Lebanese President Michel Aoun spoke in a press interview with Reuters on Saturday, October 29, 2022, one day before he left Baabda Presidential Palace about “constitutional chaos” because of the presidential vacancy with the inability to elect a new president and under the caretaker government accusing it of being other than Full powers.

The day before the end of his six-year term, on Sunday, October 30, 2022, Aoun is scheduled to leave the presidential palace in Baabda. Despite this, four electoral sessions failed to elect a president due to the parliament’s unprecedented division following the May elections and the political blocs’ inability to agree on a candidate to succeed Aoun.

Lebanon is currently on the verge of an unprecedented situation where the presidency is empty and the business drain government has only limited authority. The role of president has been vacant numerous times in the past.
Aoun hinted that he is still considering an unspecified political move in the last hours of his mandate to address the constitutional crisis, but he told Reuters, “There is no final decision” about what this step could have.

“Yes, it is legitimate to have a constitutional disorder; the void does not fill the void,” was the answer to a question.
Aoun’s presidency is closely related to the minds of many Lebanese people in their worst days since the civil war that took place between 1975 and 1990, in light of the existence of a financial crisis that started in 2019 and the Bayt of Beirut’s explosion, which caused the deaths of 2020.

The son-in-law of Gibran Bassil Aoun is said to be interested in running for president. On the basis of allegations of corruption, the United States placed Basil on the sanctions list in 2020, although he refuted these claims.
Aoun said today, Saturday, that the sanctions will not prevent Basil from running for the presidency. He continued, “He most certainly has the right to run for president.

When asked if she would obstruct the American sanctions in the absence of Basil running for president, Aoun responded, “We are moving her as soon as he was elected.
In his last week in the position, Aoun signed an American understanding of the demarcation of the South maritime borders of Lebanon with Israel, which represents a diplomatic breakthrough that would allow both sides to extract gas from marine reservoirs.

He claimed that the powerful Hezbollah organisation supported by Iran, which repeatedly threatened to destroy the marine drilling platforms and threatened to send drones over Israel, was a “deterrent” to furthering negotiations in favour of Lebanon.
He continued, “The initiative taken by Hezbollah was important, but it was not coordinated (with the state).”
In this instance, Aoun remarked, “We would not have permitted Israel to extract gas.” Aoun added, “We did not accept not to allow us to collect oil and gas from our waters.”

He added that the deal paved the way for gas discoveries that could be the “last opportunity” for Lebanon to recover from the three -year financial collapse and which cost the currency 95 percent of its value and pay 80 percent of the population to poverty.
