French President Emmanuel Macron committed to invest roughly 250 million euros to enhance the helicopter fleet and expand the “Canadir” fleet in order to better fight forest fires, according to the French daily “La Tribune” today, Sunday.

This came up during his meeting the day before yesterday, on Friday, with 350 representatives of firefighters, pilots, and volunteers in the field to thank them for their assistance in putting out forest fires this summer. Macron said it was time to “think about a new strategy” to combat a scourge that may become a permanent problem due to global warming, and he added that the upcoming summer seasons are likely to be very challenging and difficult to predict.

This plan is supported by three pillars, according to the Elysee: fire prevention, success in fighting fires more successfully by bolstering firefighting capabilities, and finally, reintegration (or re-afforestation of forests) and the sustainable management of French forests.

With investments totaling 250 million euros, the state decided to initiate an emergency reinforcement programme to strengthen civil security capacities, which are reportedly suffering as of late, according to the Audit Bureau. Macron stated, “In front of this unprecedented scenario.
The French president also declared that the state will make significant investments so that the sixteen existing dual-engine aircraft would be replaced by 2027.
