He is one of the COVID-19 pandemic’s most recognisable faces in Saskatchewan.
Over the past couple of years, whether it was briefing the public with the latest COVID-19 provincial data and statistics, or providing health advice, Dr. Saqib Shahab has been there to offer information and recommendations throughout the pandemic as Saskatchewan’s chief medical health officer.
Though it has been a hectic moment for Canadian healthcare, the top physician has always seized the chance to acknowledge the hard work and tenacity of healthcare professionals as well as the work and support of the province’s residents.
“Many people who were urged to work from home or stay at home did so right away. In the spring of 2020, even the schools went online. However, a large number of employees were necessary in order to keep our supermarket stores filled.
The lights are on, and the water is running. They commuted to work every day. And these, in my opinion, are the genuine heroes,” Shahab said in an interview with Shaping Saskatchewan.
“It was a difficult moment. But looking back, I feel incredibly proud to have been a member of the Saskatchewan community throughout the pandemic.
For the past 25 years, Shahab has worked in the field of public health.
He has worked for the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health for the past 12 years, first in the position of deputy chief medical health officer and most recently in the position of chief medical health officer.
In the same way that his mentors assisted him in learning and developing, he claims it is vital for him to assist others in achieving their goals.
“Throughout my career, I’ve been supported by many people who came before me, both in medicine and in public health.
And they enabled me to pursue my passion, develop and excel in my areas of competence, both general and specialised, and they truly enabled me to excel in my field, Shahab continued.
“To me, leadership is allowing others to reach their greatest potential. And whether it’s working at a local public health unit in government or in health care or any other setting, I think that’s what I’ve learned from my mentors and that’s what I’ve tried to support. ”.
