According to a Washington Post investigation, the leaders of the top bodybuilding federations in the country press female competitors to pose in nude images and “sexually exploit” them.
According to the newspaper, GM Maneun, whose father Jim had been managing amateur and professional bodybuilders for decades, operated a network of light-content pornographic websites for more than 15 years. At one point, the network claimed to have “more than 30,000 pictures” of competitors in this sport.
More than 200 athletes have been included in pictures from the website archive, including “unofficial bikini shots and sexual photos,” as well as images of naked ladies “sleeping together in the family and bathtubs.”
“Your favourite fitness athletes… naked” was the heading on one of Manion’s websites.
The director of the prestigious Olympia competition, Manion, reportedly urged Jin Gates, who took home first place in that year’s competition, to “take off the top and lower bikini to snap pictures,” according to a report in the Washington Post.
Gates denied this and was shocked to find from Washington Post reporters lately that her swimsuit images had been featured alongside naked contestants on a Manion pornographic website.
After less than three years of winning Olympia, Gates gave up this activity with “disgusting,” and the young women cautioned of these competitions. “I have never agreed to upload my images on a soft porn site,” she informed the newspaper.
The newspaper conducted interviews with dozens of competitors, judges, officials, and representatives from other sports to learn more about the “systematic exploitation” of the women who participate in this sport. These women frequently put themselves in danger due to extreme dieting, a lack of financial security, and a desire to succeed.
According to the newspaper, several women feel that their ability to compete in this sport rests on their willingness to “capture sexual imagery” or “please” the sport’s leading promoters, managers, and rulers—almost all of whom are men.
