United Nations Secretary -General: “If we do not reflect the catastrophic track of climate change, we will end.”

Today, on Wednesday, Antonio Guterres, the secretary-general of the United Nations, emphasised the critical importance of the climate change issue, saying, “If we cannot reflect the current strategy that leads to a global catastrophe, we will finish.

He continued – in a statement to the BBC – that climate change should be a fundamental priority for all governments, companies, cities and civil society everywhere, adding, “We have a difficult position in Ukraine and it is the current moment crisis, but the crisis of climate change is a full life crisis And a significant concern in the modern world.

“Guterres expressed his regret that all governments were unaware of the severity of the issue at this time and that many of them concentrate only on the pressures of current challenges like inflation, the effects of war, and the high energy and food prices – with its importance – but there is a possibility to delay the priority of the issue of climate change.

Guterres emphasised the need to defend the re-positioning of the issue at the top of the international agenda and each political institution’s list of priorities, emphasising that the importance of climate peaks lies in reestablishing trust between the north and south, as well as between developed and emerging economies, and in reviving ambition.

“We confirm the need to ensure that emissions significantly reduce it and that it is a scientific demand and not only international, and raising ambition regarding adapting to climate change,” he continued. “It is clear that we are heading towards a catastrophic development despite the current pledges.

In addition, he mentioned the recent climatic catastrophes in Pakistan and other countries, the necessity of aiding developing nations in strengthening their capacity to deal with the effects both now and in the future, the necessity of securing financing, and the necessity of taking losses and damages seriously, saying, “Therefore we need more than what has been promised so far.

“We will finish if we do not reflect the disastrous course of climate change,” said the secretary-general of the United Nations.
