The American embassy in Nigeria disclosed that due to the growing threat of terrorism in Abuja, it has permitted the voluntary departure of some of its staff members and their families.
A statement published on its official Facebook page, on Wednesday, indicated that the embassy in Abuja will be, as a result of “limited ability to provide emergency assistance to American citizens in Nigeria.
“The consulate in Lagos continued to offer normal and urgent services to its citizens in Nigeria, it was also revealed.
The embassy also provided guidance to the remaining Americans, reminding them that they have personal emergency plans independent of US government assistance.
Additionally, it asked individuals to refrain from operating vehicles with diplomatic licence plates and “If you wish to leave Nigeria, use commercial transportation choices.
The most recent caution follows a security alert issued on Sunday regarding the possibility of terrorist attacks in Nigeria, notably in Abuja.
The prospective targets included government structures, houses of worship, educational institutions, markets, shopping malls, inns, dining establishments, venues for sporting events, transit hubs, law enforcement stations, and foreign organisations.
Additionally, the availability of visa services in Abuja has been significantly curtailed because applicants will be interviewed on Thursday and notified via email of their progress to the Lagos consulate.
The Nigerian Secret Police, the Ministry of Governmental Services (DSS), approved receiving the security advice on Sunday in response to the development. They also advised the public to take all necessary precautions and to provide the security services with useful information about any potential threats or criminal activity they may encounter.
As he emphasised that he is collaborating with other law enforcement agencies and stakeholders to uphold peace and order in Abuja and overseas, he also asked for calm in response to a statement made by a spokesperson for the Ministry of Governmental Services.
