Media: Finland will not prohibit the deployment of military bases for NATO and nuclear weapons in its territory

The Finnish newspaper Iltalehti reported that the Finnish draft law on the country’s accession to NATO is almost ready, and that it does not include any restrictions on the establishment of military bases in the country or the deployment of nuclear weapons.
According to the newspaper’s sources, “the government law will allow nuclear weapons to NATO to reach Finland’s territory.

Additionally, the idea places no limitations on the number of NATO member states (in its borders) or the creation of bases for the alliance in Finland.
Within the following two weeks, the measure is anticipated to be filed for consultation.

According to the sources, Foreign Minister Becca Haffesto and Defense Minister Ante Konen pledged during the joining of Finland’s joining NATO last July, that her government will not include any national restrictions or reservations over its membership, in the alliance’s joining treaty.
Finland and Sweden filed a request to the Secretary-General of NATO on May 18 in response to the Russian military intervention in Ukraine.

Up to this point, 28 out of 30 nations (with the exception of Turkey and Hungary) declared their support for including the two nations in NATO.
Earlier, the alliance announced that it was not planning to provide guarantees to Russia about the non -deployment of nuclear weapons on the lands of Sweden and Finland, if they joined the alliance.

While stating that it was too soon to discuss Russia’s deployment of nuclear weapons in the Baltic region, the Russian Foreign Ministry issued a warning in May 2017 that the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO would result in the militarization of the northern hemisphere.
