Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs elect new Grand Chief

The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) has chosen Cathy Merrick as its newest Grand Chief following the second round of voting.
In the second round, Merrick garnered 37 out of 59 votes. She replaces former Grand Chief Arlen Dumas who was removed as Grand Chief by the AMC over sexual assault allegations.
First woman to hold the position of Grand Chief of the AMC is newly elected Grand Chief Merrick.

Grand Chief Merrick formerly held the positions of councillor and chief of the Pimicikamak Cree Nation, and she has stated her intention to fight to improve the lives of all Manitoba’s Indigenous peoples.
62 of the 63 First Nations in Manitoba are represented by the AMC.
In a statement, Premier Heather Stefanson of Manitoba welcomed Merrick and stated that she was looking forward to working with him and the AMC to further their partnership.

New Grand Chief is elected by the Manitoba Chiefs Assembly.
