Tahrir Square closed amid security alert before demonstrations in Iraq

News from Al-Madinah: The public protests to remember the protests of the 25th of October 2019, which continued for several months and resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and injuries, will take place this afternoon, on Tuesday, in Baghdad and other governorates.

An Iraqi security source stated that the security forces began closing the entrances to Tahrir Square in central Baghdad with concrete barriers to calculate the launch of demonstrations in several areas of the capital, today, Tuesday. According to the source, the entrances to the islands of Sheikh Omar, Al-Sanak, the Republic, the Al-Khalani, Al-Tarawi, Granada, and Al-Nasour were all shut down as well.

Thousands of protesters filled Tahrir Square on this day three years ago to call for the reform of the political system in the nation, the elimination of unemployment issues, the creation of job opportunities, and the handling of corruption cases. The popular protest demonstrations that were started in Baghdad on this day were renewed on the first of the same month.

The demonstrations spread to nine Iraqi Shiite provinces in the country’s centre and south as a result of the Iraqi forces’ use of live ammunition and flaming projectiles to disperse the protesters in Tahrir Square. According to government statistics, 600 people were killed and about 25 thousand were injured.

These demonstrations coincide with the failure of political blocs, more than a year ago, in agreement to form a new Iraqi government against the background of the results of the early parliamentary elections that Iraq witnessed on October 10, 2021 in response to the demands of the demonstrators.
