Voters in the Waterloo Region have voted to give Karen Redman another chance.
The Waterloo, Ontario, regional chair defeated challenges from Brendon John Da Costa and Narine Dat Sookram to win an unofficial second term on Monday.
Redman was initially elected in 2018, replacing Ken Seiling, who retired after holding the position for decades.
Prior to being chosen as the MP for Kitchener Centre in 1997, Redman had previously served on local school boards and city councils. She held this position until 2010.
When she was voted to regional council in 2014, she entered municipal politics once more. She held that position for four years until being chosen as regional chair.
The second council she is set to lead will look vastly different than her first as a majority of councilors have chosen not to seek office again including three of four in Kitchener, both in Cambridge and 1 of 2 in Waterloo.
The council also consists of the mayors of each city or town; however, both the mayors of Waterloo and Wilmot, Dave Jaworsky and Doug Armstrong, have resigned.
According to preliminary results posted on the municipal website, Colleen James received the most votes in Kitchener, followed by incumbent Michael Harris. The biggest city in the area will elect four councillors, and they will be joined by Kari Williams and Robert Deutschmann.
According to the unofficial results, Jim Erb has been re-elected in Waterloo and Chantal Huinink will also represent the city seat at council.
Down in Cambridge, the residents selected longtime mayor Doug Craig and former city councilor Pam Wolf as their two council members, according to the city’s website.
