Turkey seeks to obtain a discount on Russian gas

Turkey has asked “Gazprom” for a payment delay and is attempting to negotiate a discount on the Russian gas that it receives.
According to Noureddine Nabati, the Turkish Minister of Treasury and Finance, this was revealed in a Tuesday interview with the “Financial Times”.

The Turkish minister claimed that Ankara is under intense pressure to reduce the significant amount of gas it purchases from Moscow and asked “Gazprom” to delay payments. He also stated that he anticipated “positive news” on all fronts.

On September 16, during a meeting with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan outside of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that a deal had been made to pay the Turkish side 25% of the Russian gas deliveries in rubles.
The deal to pay 25% of the Russian gas supplies in rubles will go into effect soon, according to Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fateh Donmez.

Early in October, according to sources cited by Bloomberg, Turkey asked Russia to defer some of its natural gas payments until 2024.
