Trial begins over ton of cocaine discovered in Tahiti

In Paris, the trial for 11 individuals who were apprehended in French Polynesia with more than a tonne of cocaine aboard their yachts has begun.
Prior to their 2017 detention, the 10 men and 1 woman were scheduled to stand trial for drug trafficking in Tahiti.
Ranging from 27 to 78 in age, the suspects are from Spain, Italy, France, Portugal and Panama.
They were discovered to be affiliated with the same South American drug cartel.

Early in 2017, 629 kilogrammes of cocaine were discovered hidden aboard a boat in the Marquesas Islands, and a few days later, 810 kilos of cocaine were found on a boat near Tahiti.
Two months later, the Tuamotus seized a second package weighing in at over 200 kg.
Four weeks are anticipated for the Paris trial.
In the past decade, there have been several huge cocaine seizures on yachts from the Americas bound for Australia..
