Ontario municipal election 2022: Woodstock results

In Woodstock, Ontario, Jerry Acchione has been chosen as the city’s new mayor.
With 3,612 votes, he received 38.6% of the vote, narrowly defeating his opponent David Hilderley, who received 3,441 votes, or 36.8% of the vote.
Former mayor Trever Birtch only received 3. 2 per cent of the vote as he filed to run for a third term in office earlier this year, despite facing several criminal charges including assault and sexual assault.

In February, the 47-year-old was charged with one count of assault and two counts of sexual assault in connection with complaints involving the same female complainant that date back to 2021.
According to the police, both parties knew one another.
An earlier accusation of sexual assault with choking against Birtch was eventually amended to sexual assault.
In April 2022, Birtch was also charged with three separate sexual assault counts involving a different complainant.

According to court records, at least one of the sexual assault charges is related to an alleged event that happened after Birtch was charged in February.
Birtch was one of the last candidates to declare for the fall municipal election. With 58% of the vote, he was re-elected in 2018 after being originally elected in 2014.
